Welcome to the Wedding Broom Company
"The Wedding Broom stands as a symbol of devotion by which our ancestors recreated a solemn rite under adverse conditions. It is an act of remembrance so couples never forget the struggles of past that have made us the strong people we are today.
Not long after the beginning of slavery, Africans were denied the right to marry in the eyes of the law. Our ancestors were taught rituals that began as early as childhood to prepare them for that big step into family life. Out of creativity came the tradition of "Jumping the Broom". Jumping the Broom represents the beginning of homekeeping for the couple." Later the broom was placed outside of the couple's home. Ministers during slavery would visit plantation after plantation. Once the Minister saw the broom outside the home, they knew that a couple was recently joined together and he would bless their union.
